DIY Woody & Jessie Costumes--31 Day of Halloween

Making Halloween costumes has become a tradition at our home.  I enjoy this tradition because I know that whatever my children request, I can work to figure out how to make.

This year my little boy decided he wanted to be Sheriff Woody for Halloween.  In keeping with tradition, that means the entire family would have to be a Toy Story character.  So the little man was to be Woody and little sister, with her naturally red hair, had to be Jessie.

The hardest part of making the little man's costume was finding fabric for Woody's top. I found this yellow with orange checks at JoAnn's.  Good find!  I started the little man's outfit with Peek-a-Boo Patterns Classic Oxford Shirt.  This is a great pattern and so professional looking.  Once Halloween is over, he will be able to add it to his wardrobe.  (Check out the pattern HERE)

The cow print vest I drafted myself.  Just used a t-shirt to get the right fit.  I put him in jeans, because I am lazy.  If I do decide to make him some, I will use the Skinny Jeans Pattern from Peek-a-Boo.  As Woody has very tight pants!  (Get the pattern HERE)

For sister, I started by looking at Jessie's top....a lot!  I had to decide how best to get the look.  I decided on a peasant top, because I could get it on her easily.  (I used the THIS pattern for the top and just cut it tunic length)  Next, I stitched the red "rope" design on the yellow fabric using a zigzag stitch.  It was actually quite simple and came out better then I expected.  As you can see I color blocked the top and the sleeves a bit just to get the effect I was looking for.

For the skirt, I actually started with the Sporty Girl Skort Pattern (get it HERE).  This helped with sizing.  I cut the skirt down a bit and then added more fullness to get the ruffled look.  I LOVE how it turned out!

Finally, for their hats.  I had a hard time finding hats that were the right look and color.  So I made them!  Check out the Tutorial HERE!

Overall, I am super happy with the outcome.  They will look awesome.  Now, I just have to figure out mine and the hubs costumes!  (We are going to be Ken and Barbie!  Yikes!!)

  2. They look so cute! I can tell your family Halloween photo is going to be great. I love Disney themed costumes!

  3. Remember how we loved Toy Story in High School. I love that you are doing costumes from that movie.
